Activate your new Capital One card at capitalone.com/activate to start making purchases, payments, and online transactions. This guide covers what you need, the exact steps, and what to do right after activation.

What you need before you start

  • Your new Capital One credit or debit card
  • The 3-digit security code (CVV) from the back of the card
  • Your Capital One online banking username and password
  • A secure internet connection

Steps to activate at capitalone.com/activate

Visit capitalone.com/activate

Open your browser and go to capitalone.com/activate.

Sign in to your Capital One account

Enter your username and password. If you don’t have online access yet, choose Set Up Online Access and follow the prompts.

Select the card to activate

Pick your new card from the list of accounts linked to your profile.

Enter your 3-digit security code

Type the CVV from the back of the card and submit to confirm activation.

Set your PIN (debit cards only)

Create a 4-digit PIN you’ll use at ATMs and in stores.

Alternative activation methods

  • Mobile app: Open the Capital One Mobile app and go to Profile → Account & Feature Settings → Activate a Credit Card.
  • Phone: Call the number printed on the sticker attached to your new card and follow the automated prompts.

After you activate

  • Update recurring payments: Move subscriptions like Netflix, Spotify, and utilities to your new card.
  • Add to your digital wallet: Save the card in Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay.
  • Sign the back of the card: Adds a quick extra security check for in-person purchases.
  • Dispose of the old card: Cut through the chip and magnetic strip. For metal cards, return using the envelope Capital One provided.

Troubleshooting

Double-check the card number and CVV. If it still fails, call the activation number on the sticker attached to your card.
On capitalone.com/activate, select Set Up Online Access and enter your card details, Social Security number, and date of birth.
Sign in to your Capital One account to check shipping status, or call Capital One customer service to request a replacement.
